What is a periodontal injury?

What can you do?

If a periodontal injury occurs, timely action is important and corrective measures can often be taken to save your permanent teeth!

  •  Keep calm and act rationally
  •  When bleeding heavy, bite on Gauze or a cloth handkerchief – apply ice to the outside
  • Immediately see a dentist or dental clinic!

Broken off teeth

Preserve the broken off tooth in water and immediately see a dentist or dental clinic!

Knocked-out teeth

Place and transport your knocked-out tooth in a tooth saver box, which is available in pharmacies and dental practices. If not available, place your tooth in cold milk or wrap it in plastic wrap. Immediately see a dentist or dental clinic!

Important: Do not clean the broken off tooth nor touch the tooth root, keep wet.

Are injured milk teeth also treated?

Accidents with milk teeth can leave permanent damage to tooth germs, which can have negative effects on permanent teeth that have not broken through yet. See a dentist or dental clinic immediately when a milk teeth injury occurs.

How are teeth accidents treated?

The dentist will inspect the affected teeth (e.g. through x-ray imaging) and examine the extent of damage to the teeth, teeth roots, or nerves. Broken-off teeth-parts are glued, if possible. Loosened or shifted teeth are moved to the original position and fixed with a rail. Knocked out teeth are reinserted.

What are the chances of success when treating a periodontal accident?

The quicker you see a dentist, the better the chance for successful treatment. Knocked out teeth remain vital for 24h when placed in a tooth saver box, but only for a limited time in cold milk. Loosened or shifted teeth should be fixed with a rail as soon as possible after an accident occurs.

Who pays for the treatment costs related to a periodontal accident?

Periodontal accidents are injured. For employees with insurance through their employer, the industrial injuries insurance or the non-workplace accident insurance takes responsibility. For non-working individuals such as children, teenagers and retirees, the health insurance at the time of accident takes responsibility. All periodontal injuries must be reported immediately to the respective insurance.
